Cooking in Ireland

This is Irish bacon. It comes smoked or not but the smoked kind tastes most like Americn bacon. It is good for breakfast but doesn't work well in recipes calling for crumbled bacon etc. The American missionaries request REAL bacon in their Christmas packages and apparently Costco has some kind that doesn't need to be refrigerated.

Eggs are not refrigerated in the store. They are stocked right next to the sugar and flour in the baking aisle. "Free range" eggs are much cheaper so that's what I buy. They are always brown and each carton will have eggs of various sizes. Note the chicken feathers stuck to the side. Always crack the egg into a separate dish before adding to baking or scrambling etc. Tom likes runny eggs but we eat them well done here.

Learning my way around the grocery store shelves has been interesting. Flour comes in about 10 varieties and each is used for a different purpose. Strong flour is used for yeast concoctions and can be difficult to find. Note the corn flour-corn starch and the baking soda is straight from chemistry class. My companion has to be with me at the grocery store and that is his trial during this service. Because there are so many nationalities that have immigrated to Ireland just about anything can be found here-if you have any idea what it is! Things we miss- canned green beans, Karo syrup, canned milk, pumpkin but we are exploring new options. And I have a freezer area that will hold 2 chicken breast so we don't have ice cream unless we buy it by the cone at the shopping center.

good thing that you are not trying to raise 8 kids there! The feather on the egg is gross! I don't know if I could eat it. Have you done any sight seeing yet?
